Artist Statement
My artwork is the place where my worlds collide. I was trained as a clown by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. I work as an art educator and a theatrical designer. Through my work I strive to share humorous, quirky and dramatic moments rooted in nostalgia. Children experience creative play on a grand scale. Battles to save the universe can take place on a bedroom floor. A favorite toy enjoyed on a summer’s day can leave an indelible memory. Using scale, color and technique I invoke the emotional memory over empirical reality. Value and grandeur are granted to the ephemera through the inclusion of heavy baroque frames, both real and trompe l’oeil. Frames are a signifier granted to objects of value and significance. I likewise use them to validate both the reality and memory of childhood. Memories free to roam push beyond the traditional picture plane invading the frames as they are pulled back to the present by our acknowledgment of them.
